Renting a dumpster is a relatively simple process. ZTERS determines the best dumpster type for your project based on the amount and type of waste, rental duration, & delivery address. We give you an exact quote and setup a window to have the dumpster delivered to the jobsite. You fill up the dumpster, we come pick it up and take it to the nearest waste facility.
The size of a dumpster you need is not only going to be determined by the amount of waste you are disposing, but also what type of waste it is. Dirt and rock, for example, weigh significantly more than other construction debris or household trash, and therefore you will need a smaller container so the truck can handle the weight of the haul. Here are some typical dumpster sizes with example debris types:
Dumpster Size | Tons Included | Debris Types |
10 Yard | 2 | Flooring, piping, concrete, heavy debris |
20 Yard | 3 | Lower-end commercial construction |
30 Yard | 3 | Landscaping, renovation waste |
40 Yard | 4 | Large scale construction |

Whether or not you can put a dumpster on the street depends on the area and the laws of your local municipalities. Check with your local municipality to find out whether a license is required in your area. For example, you must obtain a Street Use permit before your dumpster is delivered and placed on a street in Seattle, Washington. This only pertains to residential use, however. When placing dumpsters in the public right-of-way for commercial purposes, you will need a Commercial Use permit instead. For more information, check out the rules and regulations for your city or county.
In most cases, a dumpster can be delivered as soon as the next day if it is ordered before noon in the applicable time zone, Monday through Friday. A rush fee may be applicable for all next day orders called in after 12:00 p.m. noon and/or for Saturday deliveries. If a dumpster is needed any sooner, call us at 888-251-2660 and we will do our best to have the container delivered when you need it. However, please be aware that delivery times are not guaranteed. If a dumpster is required in the morning, we strongly recommend scheduling the delivery for the day before you plan to use it.
A good rule for determining the room you need for a dumpster placement is to take the length and height of the dumpster size and double it. That way, you’ll have plenty of space for the container as well as the truck to load and unload with ease. For example, a 10 yard dumpster measures 13 feet long by 3.5 feet high. So ensure that your delivery area measures at least 26 feet long with a minimum overhead clearance of 7 feet. Also ensure there is enough road clearance leading up to the worksite for the delivery truck to access.
Additional costs are applied for any amount of weight over what is included in the initial price for the dumpster. Exceeding the weight limit could potentially cause damage to the container or make it harder and more dangerous to transport. If the weight limit is significantly exceeded, your delivery will have to be split into two or more trips so that the risk is mitigated.
